Official Site of the Night Mail project, Traveling Post Office Group & International Railway Preservation Society
The Night Mail Project is an exciting new addition to the railway, to be constructed at Ferry Meadows. The idea of the project is to build a museum to exhibit the railways extensive collection of Traveling Post Office and Wagon-Lits rolling stock as well as memorabilia owned by Nene Valley Railway. Currently the museum is in the design stage with construction so far consisting of site clearance and assembling of track work for future installation.
The Wagon-Lits to be displayed in the Rail Mail museum are supported by the IRPS (International Railway Preservation Society), a new group rapidly gaining members and support to help fund and restore WL Sleeping Car 3916 and WL restaurant car 2975. Initial restoration work is concentrating on WL 3916, seen here on the right, prior to restoration work. Despite only being active for less than a year, substantial funds have already been raised to help restore the roof, preventing further deterioration.
Finally, the third project to be housed at the museum is the already firmly established TPO group. The railway currently owns 9 TPO coaches, 5 new style Mark 1s, an LMS TPO (M30272M, the only surviving coach from the great train robbery), 1 Southern Railway TPO (4920), 1 LMS Full Brake (30976) and a Great Northern TPO (2178, body only). Every year several events are held at the railway featuring a rake of TPO's, where visitors can experience first hand what working on a TPO coach was really like. This experience includes witnessing the exchange of mail at either of our two mail 'drop off points'.
