Perhaps the ultimate gift for any railway enthusiast has to be the opportunity to drive a locomotive.   It doesn’t matter if the person involved is a steam or a diesel fan. At the NVR we’ve got something to suit everybody. The Nene Valley railway has been offering Steam and Diesel driver experiences to the general public for nearly 20 years and our experienced crews make sure that everyone gets the maximum from the day.

Friday 26th May 2017

Take to the regulator and drive Royal Scot No 46100. The course will be without rolling stock and consists of 1 hour tuition and 1 hour on the footplate. During the hour on the footplate, 2 participants will take it in turns to drive and or fire the locomotive for a total distance of 15 miles. Participants are also provided with drinks and a meal, given membership to the Nene Valley Railway and a few souvenirs to commemorate the day.

Course participants must be at least 18 years old and physically fit as they need to be able to gain access to and work within the confines of a locomotive cab. We do not apply an upper age limit as long as participants are reasonably fit, agile, mentally capable and able to hear, understand and comply with instructions fully. If you have any concerns about this we ask that you contact us at Wansford to discuss prior to booking a course to prevent any embarrassment on the day. This is to ensure everyone’s safety and prevent possibly damaging our historic locomotives.
