5485 Parts © Alex AlderSince it's return to traffic, with a new superheater header, in October 2007, the loco has run reliably needing only minor running repairs and all the usual maintenance – at times it has been our only working steam loco apart from Thomas, with 73050's boiler repair and Mayflower on holiday. Water treatment is to be started on the loco, meaning that the blowdown valve would be needed to blow the accumulated sediment from the firebox at the end of each day. With the J94 2183 working trains, the blowdown valve was removed for overhaul. The components inside were all steel / iron (the joy of Polish engines!), and had corroded – the spring was in two pieces.
Alan Whenman © Alex AlderA new valve was made in Bronze, using the original valve body, and the original valve face flattened and lapped in. The refitted blowdown valve now seals perfectly. The test cocks on the boiler backhead (acting as a back up to the water gauge) have never worked properly; they were repaired for the recent boiler exam, but seized soon afterwards. Alan has been unable to find suitable ready made replacements, so he is making a new pair, from scratch.

The repairs will be completed for the loco's next duty, later in May.

If you want to get involved, call 01780 781676 at break times, of 10:00, 12:30 or 15:00, not forgetting to get permission from your wife / husband / girlfriend / parents first! Or e-mail info@nvr.org.uk. Alternatively just turn up. Particularly good are Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays - plenty of other volunteers, and plenty of banter.
