Introduction
'Tinkerbell' is the name given by NVR members to Danish F-class 0-6-0T No. 656 in recognition of the steam-operated bell on the cab roof. She was built in 1949 to meet an urgent need for new locomotives following the end of World War II but is to a far older design. The first F-class appeared in 1898 and this itself was a development by Busse of a locomotive built in 1873 by R & W Hawthorn of Newcastle-on-Tyne for the state railways of Jutland-Funen.With her sister locomotives in Denmark, 'Tinkerbell' would have been used mainly for shunting on and off the ferries but the class also pulled goods and passenger trains along branch lines. With her top speed of 50 km/hour (31 mph) she is representative of a far less hurried age when there was time to admire the scenery on the way to the destination! 'Tinkerbell' is currently undergoing a heavy overhaul, which started in November 2003 under a very strict control system including full part numbering and computer database recording, with photographs being taken of all components and assemblies. Having to allocate part numbers and take photographs at every stage is a pain but will ensure an easier, more accurate and far quicker loco re-assembly. |
