Orton Mere Station is an ideal point to either join the train or stop off at whilst travelling.

It has an adjacent free car park for visitors.

Within easy walking distance there are lakes which are ideal for those who want to just stroll along by the water. They also offer good opportunities for photographing the local bird population.

Most Sundays you will see model radio controlled boats in action on one of the lakes.

The station itself has two platforms with most services departing from platform one unless there are special events taking place, this offers good photographic opportunities for those as locomotives can be photographed from either platform. It is open every day passenger services are running and serves wrapped snacks together with hot and cold drinks. Ice creams are also sold.

The passing loop is often used by works trains at the weekend and a variety of freight wagons can sometimes be seen behind the works services.

Also adjacent is the river Nene with the mere from which the station takes it's name. The lock at the mere offers good opportunities through the summer to watch boats being worked through varying from small pleasure craft to large narrow boats both on hire and privately owned. Also here you may well see canoes in the white waters below the mere where regular competitions are held through the year.

To the east of the station is the Fletton loop which is the railways link to the main rail network. Visiting locomotives can be photographed often pausing at the station before proceeding to Wansford.
