Details

On the weekend of 10th & 11th May 2008 the Nene Valley Railway will be undertaking the official launch of the Travelling Post Office exchange equipment at Yarwell Cutting, a short walk from the new station at Yarwell Junction.

The equipment has been installed at Yarwell over the last few months following the awarding of an "Awards for All" Heritage Lottery grant of £7,068 last August to renovate and install the equipment.

Each day will see both steam and diesel locmotives work the TPO, with Austerity 2183 working the first TPO trip on both days at 11:25, 31271 working the 13:10 and 14:55 trips on the Saturday with D9516 working the 13:10 and 14:55 trips on the Sunday. The class 31s used to work Travelling Post Office services in the Peterborough area (East Anglian TPO) for many years, so 31271 will recreate these scenes on the Saturday.

Travelling on the TPO

You may travel on board the Travelling Post Office coaches between Wansford and Yarwell and on the return journey, but MUST disembark the train while the TPO is at Yarwell undertaking the exchanges.

The Railway's Rover ticket allows passengers on the TPO specials but passengers who want to just see the mail train in action can travel at £5 adult and £2.50 children (tickets available from the ticket office). It's well worth seeing and besides entertaining, is educational for children.

To see an example of exchanging mail, at Yarwell, please take a look at a video from our trial run in February 2008.

If you can't make this weekend then don't forget the 'Rail Mail 2008' weekend on 21st & 22nd June 2008.
